The sound of changing weather

Weather can be heard before it is seen. Rain sounds different on leaves, metal and pavement; wind changes character as branches move from bare to leafy. Listening to one small area makes those differences easier to separate.

Choose a sheltered place and spend two minutes without recording anything. Then write down the nearest sound, the most distant sound and the one that repeats. Avoid identifying every source with certainty: a description of rhythm or texture can be more accurate than a guess.

Return in another season. The comparison is not a measurement of the whole landscape, but it is a useful record of one place and your attention to it.
